In liminal states, past beliefs linger with the prospect of new ways of being. These quiet lingerings structure our habits and rituals. Maybe you keep a rosary tucked in a vanity drawer, not for use, but as a gentle reassurance that it’s there. Maybe you’ve hung on to fabric scraps that once made up a childhood blanket, as its remnants still offer some sense of security that a past belief assured you it had. Culturally and individually, we exist in states of in-betweenness. It is in this threshold of ambiguity that we can question or begin to situate our connection to what once was and what can be. Liminalities considers what we hold on to as we navigate transitions of identity, culture, belief, and place. Artists Eva Birhanu, Anastasia Ferguson, Jera MacPherson, Yvonne Niegas, and Carolina Vasquez-Lazo invite viewers into these beginnings, endings, the places in between, and portals to connections or ways of being we might not yet know.

Whether a quiet weekday lunch, a late night take out, or a celebratory dinner, Chinese restaurants are embedded in a socio-cultural fabric as a consistent and ongoing space to find nourishment and gathering. It is in the moment of gathering that we find the time to connect, to commune, and to care. On the Menu utilizes personal, familial and communal histories of Chinese restaurants, the people that own and operate them, and the communities that exist within them as a means to challenge the perspective of hierarchical understandings of labour and to celebrate community care. Within backdrops of Chinese restaurants Snack Witch Joni Cheung, Kev Liang, and Xiao Han invite viewers into the repetitive acts of restaurant kitchens, the intimate moments shared between families, and intergenerational memories that weave together a community spirit as a means to explore the connecting lines of displacement, gathering, migration, and community.
Thank you to the Chin Family for their generous consultation and their sharing of familial memories that informed this exhibition’s development.
Nuit Blanche Regina | 2023
NBR’s one-night-only model in its nature acts as an ephemeral experience for festival attendees, artists, and the very structures the works interact with. This year’s theme considers the experiences of the festival in juxtaposition to the role of artists in the creation and dissection of memory and the capturing, celebration, or perhaps grieving of fleeting time. We invite viewers to question the value of memory and ephemerality in relation to the temporary alterations our artists make to locations of familiarity in Regina’s downtown core.
